Progressive Church Rancho Cucamonga

Faith that asks questions

Progressive Christianity in the Inland Empire

The Inland Empire is not short on churches. Drive down Foothill Boulevard or Baseline and you’ll pass dozens—many of them large, polished, and deeply rooted in evangelical theology. If that tradition feeds you, we genuinely celebrate that. But if you’ve ever sat in a pew and felt like the God being described doesn’t match the God you’ve experienced—or if you’ve left church altogether because the theology stopped making sense—Sacred Place might be the community you didn’t know existed.

Sacred Place United Church of Christ is a progressive church in Rancho Cucamonga. We are part of the United Church of Christ, a denomination rooted in the belief that God is still speaking—that revelation didn’t stop when the canon closed, and that the Spirit is alive in the questions we ask today.

What We Mean by “Progressive”

Progressive Christianity isn’t Christianity Lite. It’s not a faith that’s afraid to go deep. At Sacred Place, progressive means we take Scripture seriously enough to read it in context—as literature written by real people in real historical circumstances, inspired by God but not dictated word-for-word. We don’t reduce the Bible with literalism, and we don’t reduce the way God is revealed to its pages alone.

We use gender-inclusive language for God. We believe God has both motherly and fatherly characteristics, and that the Holy Spirit has never been well served by the English language’s gendered pronouns. We talk about this openly, because theology matters—and the words we use to describe God shape the communities we build.

We are explicitly LGBTQIA+ affirming. As an Open & Affirming congregation, we have made a formal, public commitment to the full inclusion of queer and trans people in every dimension of church life. Our pastor is gay. Same-gender couples are married here. Trans and nonbinary people are celebrated, not merely tolerated.

We center justice. Not as a program or a committee, but as the heartbeat of what it means to follow Jesus. When we look at the gospel, we see a ministry consistently focused on reaching those on the margins—and we believe the Church should look the same.

Not Your Parents’ Church (Unless Your Parents Are Cool)

A lot of people in Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, Ontario, and the surrounding Inland Empire grew up in evangelical or fundamentalist churches. Some had beautiful experiences. Many didn’t. If your experience of Christianity has been defined by shame, rigid gender roles, purity culture, or the idea that asking questions means losing your faith—we want you to know there’s another way.

At Sacred Place, doubt is welcome. Hard questions are welcome. You don’t have to check your brain at the door. We believe faith is strengthened by honest inquiry, not threatened by it. We engage science, history, psychology, and the full breadth of human experience as part of how we understand God’s work in the world.

Many of our members came to Sacred Place after years away from church—or after painful experiences in other congregations. We are a trauma-informed community. Our worship is designed to be grounding, not triggering. We don’t use fear or shame as motivators. We don’t do altar calls. We do offer communion to everyone, every time, no exceptions.

Join Us on Sunday

We gather every Sunday at 11 AM at our Mission Center in Rancho Cucamonga. Doors open at 10:30 for coffee and conversation. Our worship is reflective, grounded, and real—about an hour of music, prayer, Scripture, and a message that takes both the text and your life seriously.

We livestream most Sundays at live.yoursacredplace.org. Whether you join us in person or online, you belong.

We serve families and individuals from across the Inland Empire—Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, Ontario, Fontana, Claremont, Rialto, and throughout San Bernardino County. If you’ve been looking for a progressive church that doesn’t water down the gospel but refuses to weaponize it, come and see.
