What if Jesus insulted you?

Most of my last several weeks have gone into something we’ve never done before. This Sunday we begin Exploring Membership, and in all our years together Sacred Place has never actually offered it. Our tradition hands us the shape of what membership means and remarkably little about how to walk a real person through it, so I’ve been building this one from the ground up: reading, praying, writing drafts and throwing them out, asking what it should feel like to sit in that room and decide whether this is your church. It has taken more contemplation and preparation than anything else on my desk this summer, and I think it’s worth every hour of it.

Meanwhile school is in full swing and I’m deep in fall planning, and I could swear yesterday was Thursday—which is why you’re getting this email on Saturday instead of Friday.

Here’s what I’d like you to carry in with you on Sunday: what would you do if Jesus insulted you?

It isn’t a hypothetical. Somebody in Matthew 15 finds out. Bring the question with you, in person or online, 11:00 AM.

The details: Exploring Membership meets right after worship in the gathering space and runs about 30 to 45 minutes. It’s exactly what it sounds like, a chance to ask what joining Sacred Place actually means, with nothing attached.
